OYAP Participant
Co-op students in a skilled trade or Apprenticeship placement become OYAP participants when they complete and submit the OYAP Participant form.
To qualify for OYAP the student must be at least 16 years old with at least 16 credits. The student must be enrolled in Cooperative education in a publicly funded secondary school.
An OYAP Participant may become a Registered Apprentice if the employer agrees to sponsor the student.
OYAP Apprentice
An OYAP Participant may talk to their Co-op employer, parent or guardian and Co-op teacher to determine if becoming a Registered Apprentice is possible during the Co-op placement.
If the employer agrees, the student completes the OYAP Request to Register portion of the OYAP form. This is submitted to the Co-op teacher.
A Training Agreement is generated and must have 3 copies signed by the student, parent or guardian (if the student is under 18 years old), the employer and witness (this could be the Co-op teacher).
OYAP Accelerated Level 1
In Hamilton, there may be an opportunity to earn the Apprenticeship Level 1 training while the student is still in secondary school.
These programs depend on funding approval from the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD), Training Centre facility availability, and the number of applicants.
Students applying for an OYAP Accelerated Level 1 program:
- Must have successfully completed a Co-op placement in a related trade
- Should be at least 17 years old and have at least 24 credits
- Must be in a full day Co-op placement in the trade with a Training Agreement registered before the Level 1 training begins.
