Apprenticeship works

Apprenticeship is an education and training post-secondary pathway. It’s for people who want to work in the skilled trades and enjoy learning by doing.

Apprentices learn a skilled trade on the job. They work with and learn from experienced workers and get paid while they do it.

80% of an Apprenticeship is hands-on learning while increasing skills through work experience provided by employers at a worksite.

20% of an Apprenticeship is in school at an approved training centre such as a union hall or college. Depending on the trade, there could be 2 or 3 Levels of in-school training. This can occur through Block Training of 8 to 10 weeks of daily classes. It can also occur in the evenings, or one day a week over months.

It usually takes 3-5 years to complete an Apprenticeship.

While a student is in Secondary School they can explore an Apprenticeship career through a Cooperative Education placement.  There are 3 levels to OYAP in Co-op.

Exploring your Opportunities

What can you do now in Secondary School?

Take Cooperative Education in Grade 11 or Grade 12.

Cooperative Education (Co-op) allows students to “test drive” a career while earning high school credits based on in-class learning and a community placement. Co-op is immersive experiential learning.

OYAP is Co-op in an Apprenticeship Trade.
